Changes in social media editors at USA Today, New York Times

wo of the largest newspapers in the United States, USA Today and The New York Times, have announced changes in terms of social media. While USA Today is appointing new editors to lead the social media charge, the Times is folding its social media editor position into the duties of the interactive news team.

USA Today has named a social media editor and a social media analyst. the newspaper announced.

The Gannett Co.’s flagship newspaper also has created a Twitter feed, @SocialUSATODAY, that will provide the “latest updates on what USA TODAY is doing in social media, industry updates and news from the organization,” the newspaper said.

Michelle Kessler, the new social media editor, will be in charge of the newspaper’s social media initiatives. Glenna DeRoy, the new social media analyst, will be responsible for tracking the newspaper’s social media endeavors and looking “for ways to make all of USA TODAY’s products more social media-friendly,” the newspaper said.

The announcement comes even as the New York Times said its social media editor position has been eliminated, reported Poynter Online. Jennifer Preston will go back to reporting at the start of the new year, and her duties as social media editor will be incorporated into the Times’ interactive news team.

Martin Nisenholtz, chief of digital operations, said that the company considers about 15 percent of current visitors to NYTimes.com to be “heavy users,” viewing 20 pages or more a month.

Given that the site draws roughly 40 million monthly uniques, that translates to a potential base of 6 million that NYTimes.com can try to convert to paid. That is roughly seven times its daily print circulation of 877,000 and more than four times its Sunday circulation of 1.4 million.
